Perception

In the neighbourhood of Manshiyat Nasr in Cairo, the Coptic community of Zaraeeb has collected the trash of the city for decades and developed the most efficient and highly profitable recycling system on a global level. However, the area is widely perceived as dirty, marginalised and segregated.  To shed a light on this community, and with the help of his team and the help of the local community, I created an anamorphic piece that covers almost 50 buildings and that is only visible from a certain point of the Moqattam Mountain. The artwork incorporates the words of Saint Athanasius of Alexandria, a 3rd century Coptic Bishop who is known to have said, ‘Anyone who wants to see the sunlight clearly needs to wipe his eye first.’ Through the work, I question the level of judgement and misconception society can unconsciously have about a community based on their differences.
