About the Artist
Zakia Al Dubaikhi (born in Dammam, Saudi Arabia – passed away in 2018) was a Saudi artist known for her evocative depictions of everyday life and culture in the Gulf. Her artistic journey began in childhood, nurtured by her father and later shaped by Saudi Arabia’s early female art pioneers. Active in the 1980s, her work reflected themes of identity, womanhood, and social change. Though she stepped away from painting to focus on teaching and family, her creative spirit endured, and she returned to art after retiring. Her legacy has been lovingly revived by her daughter, Basma Al Zamil, through exhibitions and renewed public attention.
Celebrating the life of the Late Saudi Artist Zakia Al Dubaikhi
Zakia Al Dubaikhi’s vivid paintings offer a heartfelt portrayal of Gulf life and the Khaleeji woman—rooted in community, culture, and quiet strength. Growing up in Dammam and Bahrain’s narrow, multicultural streets, she captured everyday scenes: women preparing meals, girls playing by the sea, and women engaged in ceremonies—all infused with warmth, dignity, and subtle social commentary. Her work speaks to family ties, evolving women’s roles and rights, and Gulf heritage. Today, her daughter Basma Al Zamil, who helped curate the gallery, continues to share and preserve her mother’s artistic legacy, ensuring that Al Dubaikhi’s vision of the Khaleeji woman remains a vital part of the region’s cultural narrative. Visitors can now enjoy a selection of five works from the original gallery, which exhibited more than twenty works by the artist.
